One of the most significant and impactful pests in saffron cultivation in Iran is the saffron corm mite, Rhizoglyphus robini, which has developed resistance to 22 pesticides. Effective pesticide resistance management aims to prevent the proliferation of resistance genes that emerge due to the selective pressure exerted by pesticide application within a pest population. Strategies for managing resistance include varying pesticide doses (either lowering or increasing), using pesticides with lower persistence, limiting the treatment area and extent, and targeting only specific growth stages of the pest. As resistance to acaricides continues to rise, a comprehensive understanding of resistance management is crucial to ensure long-term pest control.
This includes knowledge of the underlying resistance mechanisms, the development of strategies to mitigate resistance, and the role of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Additional resistance management approaches involve alternating or combining pesticides, using synergists, introducing new pesticide formulations, leveraging biological predators, monitoring pest populations in the field, and incorporating transgenic plants. Detoxifying enzymes, such as cytochrome P450 monooxygenases, Glutathione-S-transferases, and esterases, are critical in metabolic resistance, as they break down acaricides before they reach their intended targets within the pest. Our research on the resistance of saffron corm mites to propargite and abamectin revealed that the use of synergists (which inhibit detoxification enzymes) reduced enzyme activity by 2-3-fold, leading to decreased resistance.
Additionally, pre-treating these mites with 26 different plant essential oils also suppressed detoxifying enzyme activity, resulting in reduced resistance to both propargite and abamectin. A primary strategy to prevent resistance is to alternate or combine pesticides with different modes of action. This approach ensures that mite populations are not continuously exposed to the same chemical, thereby reducing selection pressure for resistant individuals. Through testing 20 acaricide/pesticide combinations, we identified high sensitivity in this pest to certain new compounds that had not been previously used against it. Biological control measures, such as utilizing predatory species, can also help maintain mite populations at manageable levels, reducing the need for chemical acaricides. Laboratory experiments involving the predator Gaeolaelaps aculifer demonstrated excellent control of the pest. Research indicates that combining biological control with careful use of acaricides can slow
