This paper examines the historical relationship between food and health in Medieval India, focusing on how dietary practices were linked to medicine and overall well-being. In medieval Indian society, food was not merely sustenance but a scientifically-informed component of bealth, influenced by Ayurvedic and Unani medical systems. Elite and royal kitchens developed sophisticated dietary practices to maintain physical strength and prevent diseases, while the common population relied on locally available foods, shaped by
agriculture and seasonal availability. The study explores how these practices reflect a deep understanding of nutrition, digestion, and preventive medicine. By analyzing historical texts, medical treatises, and scholarly research, this paper demonstrates that food in medieval India served as both nourishment and medicine, highlighting the integration of culture, science, and health. Understanding these historical practices provides insight into the evolution of nutrition science in India and the enduring relevance of traditional knowledge in contemporary health contexts.
